Title: Charlotte’s Web
Author: E.B. White
What is the story about?
Charlotte’s Web is a true
classic that is loved by many children as well as adults. The story explores
the themes of love, friendship, sacrifice, life and death.
Fern, a perfect role model
for children, begs for father to spare the life of a runt pig, showing
tremendous maturity and compassion. The pig, which Fern named Wilbur, stays in Uncle Homer’s barn
along with other animals, including a spider named Charlotte who befriends Wilbur. Wilbur, being a pig, was always
destined to be slaughtered. So Charlotte devises a clever plan to save him,
using her gift of weaving webs.
‘Humble’ and ‘Radiant’ were weaved by Charlotte,
quickly catching the attention of the neighbours and community who thought they
were some sort of divine intervention, no longer seeing a justification for
killing Wilbur. Charlotte proves her loyalty time and time again, keeping her
promise to make sure Wilbur stays alive until her final breath. She is the true
heroine of the story.
